    North Valley Hospital

North Valley Hospital, located in Whitefish, MT, seeks artists to display their work as part of its rotating art display. The art should have a perceivably positive subject matter and convey a sense of security or safety. Art is displayed for two months and is hung in a location where a high volume of viewers will be able to enjoy it.

North Valley Hospital's "Center for Healing" has adopted the "Planetree" philosophy for caring for its patients that is patient-centered and embraces customer service for everyone--including its employees. The Planetree organization has done extensive research on design features that are conducive for healing.

Although North Valley Hospital has been providing care for over 100 years in Whitefish, it built a new facility in 2007 and were fortunate to include Planetree healing design features in this new building.

North Valley Hospital Art Selection Policy

All visual art (paintings, prints, photographs) displayed in patient and public areas will have perceivably positive subject matter, convey a sense of security or safety, and have Art Committee approval. Artwork will be evaluated on a piece-by-piece basis. Priority will be given to selecting representational art depicting the following:

    • Waterscapes
      • Calm or non-turbulent water, not stormy conditions
    • Landscapes
      • Visual depth or openness in immediate foreground
      • Most pictures selected should depict landscapes during warmer season when vegetation is verdant and flowers may be visible; avoid landscapes conveying bleakness
      • Scenes with positive cultural artifacts such as barns and older houses
      • Include landscapes with low hills and distant mountains
    • Floral
      • Flowers in pictures should appear healthy or fresh, not wilted or dead
      • Types of flowers should generally appear familiar to patients, not novel or strange
      • Include garden scenes with some openness in immediate foreground
    • Figurative
      • Emotionally positive facial expressions
      • Relationships among people should be friendly, caring, or nurturing
      • Generational and cultural diversity
      • Include scenes of persons at leisure in places with prominent nature
    • Size
      • Size of visual art will be approved by the Art Committee.

The following characteristics should be avoided when selecting art for stressed patients:

    • Ambiguity or uncertainty
    • Emotionally negative or provocative subject matter
    • Surreal qualities
    • Closely spaced repeating edges
    • Forms that are optically unstable or appear to move
    • Restricted depth or claustrophobic-like qualities
    • Close-up animals staring directly at the viewer
    • Outdoor scenes with overcast or foreboding weather

I am also interested in hanging my artwork. I am a photographer who relishes landscapes and waterfall pictures. I have several ready framed and ready for hanging, and would like to make arrangements to show you my work. You are also invited to view my work on this website by clicking on Browse By Artist and selecting my name.
