Missoula arts and cultural organizations meeting (1/18/2007)

Several Missoula arts and cultural organizations had a meeting today at the request of the Missoula Cultural Council (MCC). The meeting was hosted at the Missoula Art Museum and had attendance of about 50 people.

The meeting was overseen by MCC President Kimberly Roth and Executive Director Tom Bensen. Also in attendance were representatives from the Missoulian, NewWest, Missoula CVB, The Missoula Downtown Association, PBS, Montana Committee for Humanities, Montana Museum of Art and Culture with the University of Montana, Senator Testers Office, as well as several Missoula and Sealy Art Galleries.

This meeting was brought together to determine how best to organize art and cultural activities in Missoula, with a focus on marketing and collaboration. This meeting had the flavor of a brainstorming session, with much being discussed, but little being committed too.

Here are some of the topics discussed:

    • Creating a registry of people invested in arts and culture in Missoula. This list started with the names of the folks attending, but emphasis was also placed on those who should also have been at this meeting.
    • Creation of a centralized Calendar of Events for use in marketing, but also for use in long term planning and coordination between the varied Art related organizations in Missoula.
    • Organizing a list of all venues available in Missoula where artists, performing artists, and classroom workshops can be conducted.
    • Creation of, or adaptation of, existing marketing materials to include an emphasis on the arts and culture available in Missoula.
    • Regularly scheduled meetings and potentially social functions to foster dialogue in the arts community.
    • Marketing Missoula as the Cultural Superstar of Montana, though the name slogan and marketing materials are still very much up in the air.

Many other topics were discussed, but were so numerous that I couldn't keep up with them all. A future meeting date was wasn't specified, but when it is, I'll be sure to post something about it here.
