Wildlife, dramatic scenery and year-round recreation await you in Lincoln. It’s the gateway to the wilderness and a place where the wildlife come right into town. The Continental Divide bisects this region and gives you the best on both sides: the Sun River Canyon on the east slope and the beautiful Blackfoot Valley on the west.

In Lincoln, visitors may want to explore the Community Hall and Lincoln Lodge which are on the National Historic Register. The lodge is an 18-room hotel. Another area attraction is the Blackfoot Valley Historical Society Museum which displays the Lincoln Gulch gold mine artifacts and shares the valley heritage with visitors.

Lincoln is a paradise for snowmobilers, with trails starting right in town. The heated clubhouse of the Ponderosa Snow Warriors is the hub of snowmobile races and events in an area which offers 250 miles of groomed trails and limitless play areas.

Lincoln is a stop on the Race to the Sky, the annual 350-mile sled dog race from Helena to Seeley Lake in February. Sled dog racing is becoming a popular local sport.

    Attractions near Lincoln include:

Rocky Mountain Front Corridor: Rogers Pass east of Lincoln is a migration route for eagles, and you may see great numbers if you come through in October or November. No less than 125 bald eagles and 800 golden eagles have been counted at one time.

Bob Marshall Wilderness Area: Trails from the upper Sun River area and from the Blackfoot Valley on the other side of the Continental Divide will take you into the 1,009,356-acre wilderness area. No motorized vehicles are allowed, and you should contact a local guide before tackling the ‘Bob.’

Scapegoat Wilderness: This rugged wilderness area is north of Lincoln and adjacent to the Bob Marshall.

Sun River Canyon: The landscape is ruggedly beautiful in this area northwest of Augusta. This is superb range for game animals and other wildlife. With luck, you may see one of Montana’s largest herds of bighorn sheep.

Blackfoot and Little Blackfoot Rivers: The Blackfoot is popular with white-water rafters, and both rivers offer good fishing.

Lincoln is not a mining camp, but the heart of a present-day mining area. In the vicinity are the old camps of Stemple, the old Gould Mine, the Mike Horse, Jay Gould, North Gould Bachelor, and other mines. Most of these mines belong to the Phelps Dodge / 7 up / Pete Joint Venture and are not open to the public. Lincoln was named after two mining companies that operated in the area: Lincoln Placers, Inc. and Lincoln Associates, Inc. They, in turn, were named after the first mine, located on August 31, 1865, at Abe Lincoln Gulch.
