Belgrade was named by a Serbian capitalist from Belgrade (present day Yugoslavia), who was a special guest in 1883 of President Villard of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The men were on a train to Gold Creek to attend the ceremony of driving the last spike. The post office was established in 1887; Thomas Quaw was postmaster. Quaw bought land and established a grain trading business. The Serbian’s were unhappy with their investments, but Quaw opened a grocery store, established a church, and built a school in 1891. In the early 1900s, this area flourished with abundant wheat productivity. Elevation: 4,454 feet
