Alberton was originally established in 1907 by the Albert family who came from Canada in the 1870s. The area was homesteaded when Indian trails were the only roads. It was a division point for the Milwaukee Railroad and by 1916, over 400 people lived here. The railroad built a roundhouse, a depot, railroad shops and employee housing. Within a year, the Milwaukee had expanded its western Montana route and closed the intermediate division points. Many families then left as the town’s economy declined. Recently the Milwaukee depot has been restored and is visible from I-90. Alberton is the Gateway to the Alberton Gorge, favored by whitewater rafters, avid anglers and hunting enthusiasts.
