I am a painter and native son of Montana. My response to Montana’s primal land is visceral, thus I’m compelled to paint her landscapes. Montana is what our world was meant to be and it’s my desire to convey that belief artistically. My goal is to elevate Montana’s prairies, mountains, and wildlife to a higher realm and preserve them through my paintings.
Using undertones is how I reflect my feelings about subjects. For example, I seek to express Montana’s warmth by painting in colors that blend with undertones, such as in “Harvest Moon.” Currently, I’m focused on the American Impressionists, as I study their use of undertones, tonalist palettes, and representative techniques. The works of John Singer Sargent and Spain’s Joaquin Sarolla impart both artists’ feelings about their subjects realistically; I deeply respect their places in the lineage of great impressionistic painters.
I’ve learned from laying rail on Montana steel gangs, years of hiking Glacier National Park and growing up on the prairie that every object, natural or man-made, has a story. Each tractor I’ve painted has its own story, as does each bison and wheat field. When I paint, my emotions are profound yet I want to represent the subject and its story faithfully. It’s my honor to paint these stories of Montana. My paintings are the most significant thing I have to offer.
