    SILK PAINTINGS
    BY PATTY CORBETT

I have been involved in art since I was a child and have worked in many different mediums but none can compare with the excitement and spontaneity of dye on silk. I have tried to capture the vibrancy of the colors of Montana that have been my inspiration for the last 12 years. The colors, shadows and light that play in the contour of Montana’s beautiful valleys, mountains and water have become a never-ending inspiration. The luster of the silk, vibrant colors, and the soft fluid flow of the dye, gives the artwork a glow, which adds to my whimsical and colorful style that helps to capture the magic of Montana.
In my technique, I start by drawing freehand using resist forming barriers for the dyes. The dye is than applied with a brush in a watercolor style. Many “happy accidents” happen as the dye flows in a spontaneous and unpredictable way. This provides and additional fascination with enthralling colors and the freedom of the dye flow. The painting is then dried and steamed to set the colors. After this process it is necessary to wash the silk to remove the resist and to suspend the dye particles. The silk is then ironed, stretched and framed.
Using this same technique I also paint silk scarves, sarongs and kimonos.
