Cold, hard, flat, construction-grade steel is skillfully handcrafted and transformed into unique, stunning, shining, multi-dimensional objects d'art. Inspired by his native surroundings and legendary western artists such as Charlie Russell, Matt Campbell creates metal sculptures with exquisite form that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional as indoor and outdoor decorative pieces. An oversized metal "bowl" formed with a school of fish (as found in Montana rivers and streams), a herd of buffalo, or a ring of horses brazened with Native American Indian decorative symbols establish classic Montana decor. Matt is inspired by the beauty and simplicity of the land and the native people of Montana. Growing up in Great Falls, just down the block from CMR's studio, Matt was surrounded by both creative parents and an environment rich with Western and Native American heritage. Although he studied formally at the University of Nebraska and the University of Montana, his artistic talent seems to be more inherited than learned. If anything, Matt is a self-taught artist, one whose multitude of life experiences drive an internal force that forges fantastic works of art. As with many artists, Matt is multi-talented and skilled in arts and fine handcrafts. The bulk of each piece is metal that is cut, pounded, shaped and welded, but Matt also compliments and completes works with Batik fabric painting, custom-built log accents, and hand-painted designs. From the very conception of each metal piece, Matt infuses the spirit of Montana into each creation - a spirit derived from personal experience and native perception. His pure talent is portrayed, like no other's, in each of his works of art.
