Larry Boyer moved to Bozeman, Montana, in 1995. He attended Montana State University in Bozeman and has completed the degree requirements for a BFA in ceramic sculpture. There he developed his unique abstract ceramic sculptures.
His ceramic sculptures reflect emotive forces found within all of nature. Each sculpture delivers to the viewer an engaging experience that one often feels when closely looking at the different manifestations of nature. Each piece takes hold of its space and environment to provide an unique window into the concept suggested by its title. It is the emotive impact of many dynamic elements as felt by the heart in those who love the West that is boldly depicted by him. Abstract ceramic sculptures like these are nearly perfect in reflecting the intrinsic values of design in nature as the clay itself is intrinsically a child of the earth. Even the walnut art bases found under the sculptures suggest a terminal root and a point of beginning from the earth itself.
However, before attending MSU, he developed for himself an “Old Master’s” type technique of layering charcoal over charcoal (a dry glazing), to arrive at a realistic drawing that is both atmospheric and solid. Subjects of the western USA and related themes is the armature of what is depicted.
Though one is quickly and involuntarily drawn into the visual experience of both the drawings and sculptures, the resolving of the forces take time, and causes a person to have a relationship with each work. It is this imaginative interaction with the western scene presented and its final completion by the onlooker that forcefully drives this art.
Larry Boyer is also a web designer specializing in small to medium size sites.
