Kelly Dangerfield was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. His artistic talent was obvious from a very young age. Much of his youth was split between time spent drawing and painting and time spent discovering Utah’s vast outdoor opportunities. Kelly has a deep appreciation for nature and enjoys fly fishing, waterfowl hunting, and wilderness exploration. These activities provide him with great inspiration for his work.

As an artist, Kelly is mostly self-taught, though he has received guidance from a few exceptional artists throughout his life. Kelly finds inspiration in the early American works of the Hudson River School painters, a few of his favorites being Thomas Hill, Thomas Moran, and Albert Bierstadt; and is also influenced by the work of many present-day masters including Daniel Smith, Clyde Aspevig, Mian Situ, and Bob Kuhn.

Kelly has always paid attention to the details in all aspects of his life, so it’s no surprise that this quality is reflected in his painting style. Kelly enjoys showing the intricate details of nature in his paintings, but also enjoys showing selective brush strokes at times to enhance the artistic feel of the painting. Kelly paints in a realistic style though like many of the early American painters he will at times dramatize color, light, and composition to enhance the feeling of the overall painting. He wants the viewer to experience more from his paintings than they would if they were simply looking at a photograph of the same subject.

Kelly currently resides in Bozeman, Montana where he is exposed to an endless amount of ideas for his work. He spends much of his free time exploring the mountains, rivers and trails of Southwest Montana and Yellowstone National Park searching for ideas for future paintings.
