I am an oil painter and a flute maker living and working in NW Montana in all seasons. The concepts for my work come from the path that I walk and the environment around me. My landscape paintings are an attempt to share the experience of moments spent in nature, especially in Montana. At times I am attracted by the fall of light on communities and structures and I am compelled to include evidence of the human presence. Still Life subjects give me a change of pace, a chance to experiment, and encourage deeper study. I also like to travel and these experiences will show up in my work.
While my paintings are representational, I paint directly and suggest essential detail. After exploring a variety of mediums I have found that oil painting is my medium of choice but I still enjoy doing occasional works in watercolor and acrylics.

In 2004, I began studying and making wooden flutes in the style created by Native American cultures. I long ago fell in love with the sound of this haunting instrument and eventually began to want to create these instruments. I have been studying and working to learn the skills necessary to make quality flutes, and to be able to play the music.

I view the painting and flute making as parallel paths on the same journey.
Both are nourished by time spent in nature, lead to unexpected directions of study and knowledge, and can help bring people together in deeper appreciation and respect for life and the environment.
I plan to begin to include flutes for sale on my web site soon.

Please visit my web site, http://web.mac.com/jastudio, for more information about my work.

For me the rewards of being an artist are in the study, the work, and in the eventual sharing of the work.
It will please me if others find enjoyment or a sense of peace in experiencing my paintings or holding and playing one of my flutes.
