I was born in Philadelphia (1958) at the naval base where my father was an ear/nose/throat surgeon and my mother was a retired nurse and enjoyed oil painting, partcularly ships at sea. I received much encouragement from her in developing my own artistic talent. But my interest in animals and wildlife was all-consuming for me.
We moved to North Carolina in 1970 where I attended high school and later pursued my interest in animals by studying Zoology at North Carolina State University for nearly four years. I later began studying design at NCSU and then attended Meredith College where I received my degree in Fine Art in 1989.
I have combined my love of animals and painting and, after moving to Montana in 1997 and living so close to nature, have found an abundance of inspiration along with plenty of opportunities to observe Montana's wildlife. I particularly enjoy painting on alternative surfaces to canvas - feathers, bones, rocks, leather, wood, etc. - choosing just the right surface to compliment your subject can be just as important as picking your colors. And whether it be the subject or the surface, Montana has it all!
