Jan is a Native Montanan whose family settled here in the Bitterroot Valley in the latter half of the 19th century. In 1988, she realized her dream of living in her great grandfather's ranch house near the Lee Metcalf Wildlife refuge in Stevensville with husband Rod and her son and daughter, Cody and Megan. There she could smell the sweet grasses, look at the beautiful Bitterroot Mountains, and be surrounded by the animals she loves and cares for.
Her love for art took root in high school, becoming full blown in the 1980's, painting oil on canvas for more than 20 years, switching to oil on porcelain for the past 12 years under a master porcelain painter.
Painting is not only a visual idea but also a feeling conveyed through the tip of the brush and paint, touching the fresh white of a porcelain piece.
She especially likes to capture the personality of a beloved pet by painting the eyes, which hold the key to that beings emotions and what makes them who they are. From early years up, she always wanted to be able to create a gift for the people she cares for. If they say"you've captured" a personality or a place they love, she knows she's accomplished her purpose____ to bring joy to people.
Jan is a member of IPAT(International Porcelain Artists and Teachers), a member of the state and local China painting clubs and has been represented by the River's Mist Gallery in Stevensville, the River's Edge Gallery in Twin Bridges, and has had her pieces shown at the Blacksmith Brewery in Stevensville, in banks, the Daly Mansion and the Ravalli Museum in Hamilton, and several big China Shows state wide. She has also been in the Stevensville Art Show and the Virginia city Art Show.
Her art is in the hands of people all over the United States, in Europe and in Canada. The China Decorator Magazine has featured her art work and she has also won two People's choice Awards and Best in Show.

Porcelain painting is a very old art form and is paint pigment mixed with lavender or clove oil. It is a lot like watercolor in that you start with a wash of color and keep layering and shading. Then fired in a kiln for each layer of color to get the desired depth. Each layer of color, taking about 4 hours to fire and 6 hours to cool.
