"I find while working, if I'm chuckling to myself, I'm on the right path. No chuckles I'm waddling off course."
Doug Baldwin
Doug Baldwin's ceramic art thrives on fun. He is his art. He mixes his clay with humor and keen observations personified by little terracotta ducks. "They offer a consistent base from which to depart and act as a point of reference from which I can find expression."
Baldwin moved to Montana in 1954 and studied at the University of Montana (MA,art). A ceramics course under Rudy Audio sparked what was to become his obsession with clay. After graduation he moved to New York City to study ceramics at the Brooklyn Museum School. He realized that he could not be a potter in the traditional sense though clay would be his medium and "just for the fun of it" his mantra. In 1969 he took a position chairing the Ceramics Department at the Maryland Institute, College of Art, in Baltimore. Since retirement from teaching Doug has returned to Montana when he works in the shadows of the Grizzly's football stadium in Missoula.
Fun and Games
Doug's most recent art perpetuates a fascination with ballgames and stadiums. "The be all and end all of a stadium is stuffing as many fans, buffs and boo-birders into one carefully tiered, circumambient enormous pot in order to experience, en masse, a carefully scripted conflict, like a ball game." Baldwin quips, "From ancient Maya ball courts to collegiate bowl stadiums buffs have wallowed in the idea. Something exhilarating happens when throngs converge in a stadium— screaming, howling, wave flailing bodies, primordial forces at work here. Kibitzing deities prodding wee, mortal athletes and skewing bedazzled spectators— what divine conflict, the pageant and spectacle, what humanity” what great fun."
The ballgame/stadium metaphor appears again and again in his work; over the years he has created hundreds of ballgame/stadium sculptures populated to the hilt with thousands of ball-entranced duck spectators.
Doug Baldwin has had over 20 one man shows and numerous group shows.
