Dave Samuelson is a storyteller in the western tradition of Charlie Russell. Like that famous Montanan, Dave has led a life rich in campfires and horses, and his stories spring from decades of mountain hunting and guiding.

A degree in fine arts from the prestigious Kansas City Art Institute honed Dave's boyhood skills into what is now recognized as his "fine art" of storytelling. After teaching sculpture at the University of Montana for a time, the need to distill and interpret the mountains and their inhabitants led Dave to rely more on paint and brush, although it's all just the means to an end for him – another way to tell the story.

Dave's stories are being told across the west these days. In 1988, his "Rite of Spring" won the Montana Duck Stamp Contest and the auction of his elk stories, like "Meanwhile Back at Camp", through the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, has directly raised thousands of conversation dollars across the country.

The audience giving Dave this kind of recognition is a very demanding one. Those who love these thoughtful paintings best are those who have felt the breeze, and smelled those same Montana pine forests. Here is art that, unlike the stuffed trophy on the wall, doesn't need to have the story told with added words. Works like "Born Again" and "Horn of Plenty" have enough biology and beauty combined to tell a story of ancient processes.

Good western wildlife art is not so rare these days, but much of it is produced with little thought given to the animals relationship to us and to each other. To think beyond placement and proportion requires vision and deep understanding that can come only from time in the field.
