Gloria Bannister - Pottery/Graphic Design
Working with clay is a tactile way to express creativity while getting in touch with the earth.
Gloria's work ranges from mid-fired earthenware clay to high fired stoneware and porcelain. She produces forms such as traditional functional ware to abstract vessels using a variety of glazing techniques. She was a studio partner with the late Jay Rummel at the Brunswick Building in Missoula, also working with studio artist/instructor Doug Grimm. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art Degree from the University of Montana studying with Rudy Autio, Don Bunse, Walter Hook, James Dew, Jim Todd, Ken Little, Steve Connell, Dave Samuelson (TA in sculpture). She has displayed and sold her work through craft fairs, gift shops and galleries in Montana, Wyoming, Texas and Iowa. She now works out of her home studio in Missoula, Montana.
Jay Rummel was a major influence in my life both artistically and personally. There are things he was working on that in some ways I feel obligated to continue to explore as far as the abstract historical aspect. But I also enjoy doing "bread and butter" functional pottery as art because it gives people a chance to appreciate and touch a handmade object in their daily lives.
Gloria is also a graphic designer having worked in the printing trade all her life. She was a designer for a a tool manufacturer in Western Montana, doing package design for Sears, Makita and Stanley. She has done numerous
calligraphic hand lettering projects including a commercial painting sign for Dennis Sloan and a sidewalk sign for the Downtown Bakery. She is currently doing design & production work for Big Sky Magic postcards along with other freelance graphic work.
Gloria is originally from Sheldon, Iowa. She received an Associate of Arts degree from Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa studying with Richard Williams. At the University of Montana she participated in workshops with Peter Voulkos, Dave Mason, Marilyn Levine and other visiting artists and did graduate work with adjunct professor David Smith at the anagama kiln in Lubrecht Forest outside of Missoula.
