Andrew began carving decorative decoys as a hobby in 1989 in the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland. Competitions are a popular way to showcase an artist and Andrew has won many prestigious awards. In 2002, he realized his dream by moving to Polson, Montana and carving full-time. His art has expanded to include songbirds.
Andrew’s original artwork begins as a block of tupelo or basswood. A band saw is used to follow the lines of the basic shape, followed by rotary cutters and sanding. The next phase requires drawing details on the body and head. A burning tool provides the detailed texture. Glass taxidermy eyes are set in place and acrylic paints bring each piece to life.
Andrew does business under the name of Blue Mountain Carving and each finished piece has the official logo and is signed and dated. Andrew strives to create quality original artwork with great detail and yet be able to offer his art at an affordable price.
