The Custer County Art & Heritage Center, established in 1977, is located in a park overlooking the Yellowstone River. Housed in the holding tanks of the old Miles City Water Treatment Plant, built in 1910 and 1924, the Art Center fills nearly 7000 square feet of exhibit and work space. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and earned a Montana Governor's Historic Preservation award. In the heart of Big Sky country, it serves an area larger than most states. The Custer County Art & Heritage Center is a non-profit organization guided by a philosophy of public service, both to the artist and to their audience.
The Art Center has two large, elegant galleries, featuring national exhibitions and works from its permanent collection. Artist are selected to fill a wide variety of mediums and styles through featured solo, group and theme exhibitions. Annual exhibits include the Southeastern Montana Juried Competition, the Art Auction Exhibition and the Western Art Roundup which showcases traditional and contemporary western artists. Miniature and student shows are among other regular exhibits. The Art Center Sales Gallery features original regional artwork, pottery, DVD's and books of western interest and the arts.
