Fred Chase is a native of Northwest Montana. He grew up surrounded by a family of talented artists, craftsmen and outdoorsmen including his father and grandfather who were both hunting and fishing guides. At an early age Fred began to show an artistic proclivity and a love of hunting and fishing. While growing up, he used every possible opportunity to study and hone his skills in all of his interests. The art soon included sculpture, woodworking and drafting.
The hunting and fishing led to many adventures all over North America with a number of well-known outdoorsmen and interesting people. While still in his early twenty’s, he was offered a temporary job in Alaska. He didn’t waste any time getting there and the so-called temporary job turned into twenty-five years of non-stop adventures. During his time in Alaska, Fred logged thousands of miles traveling to the most remote parts of the state. In the summers he commercial fished and bought salmon and roe from the other fishermen on the Tanana and Yukon Rivers. He also bought gold from the miners and native crafts from the people in the villages he visited. In the winter he ran a about one hundred miles of trap lines and flew all over the state with his bush plane to buy fur from the trappers at their cabins and in the villages.
During the years after he married his wife Candace, he stopped most of the flying and settled down to run their construction company and trading post/art gallery.
Through all of this he continued to do his artwork, sculpture and fine woodworking. In the mid ninety’s, Fred and Candace returned to Montana where Candace is a professional writer and journalist, while Fred pursues giant trout with his flyrod and runs Chase Studios.
